Construction & operation
A foam maker turns foam solution into expanded foam by drawing in air. Solution under pressure passes through an orifice and sprays into the body; the jet draws air in through the inlet openings, and solution and air mix into foam that is carried on to the discharge outlet.
On a floating roof tank it is mounted on the shell near the top and feeds foam down onto the rim seal area — the annular space between the shell and a foam dam on the floating roof — where rim seal fires start.
Maintenance
- Keep the air inlet screen clear of debris, insects and nests; a blocked inlet produces poor foam.
- Check the orifice is clear and undamaged, and flush the solution line after any discharge.
- Test at the intervals the governing code sets.
