Construction & operation
A medium expansion foam generator makes foam with an expansion ratio between 20:1 and 200:1 — the range NFPA 11 calls medium expansion. Foam solution is sprayed from a nozzle onto a stainless steel screen; the spray draws air through the shell, and solution and air form foam at the screen.
Medium expansion foam fills and blankets rather than flowing as a thin layer, so it suits bunded areas, pits and trenches, and spills of volatile liquids where vapour suppression matters.
Maintenance
- Keep the screen clean and undamaged; a torn or clogged screen spoils the foam.
- Check the nozzle for blockage, and the air path for obstructions.
- Test at the intervals the governing code sets.
